The History of Pompeii
Pompeii's origins date back to the 7th century BC when it was settled by the Osci, an Italic people. It later came under the influence of the Samnities before becoming a Roman colony in 80 BC.
Under Roman rule, Pompeii flourished as a vibrant commercial center and a popular resort town for wealthy Romans. Its strategic location near the Sarno River and the Bay of Naples contributes to its prosperity. The city boasted an amphitheater, forum, temples, baths, and numerous private villas decorated with exquisite frescoes.
Despite a major earthquake in AD 62 which caused signficant damaged, the residents began rebuilding their city, unaware of the impending catastrophe that would strike just 17 years later.
